ELCA Region 8 Archives at Gettysburg
Congregational
Records Access Policy
The Abdel Ross Wentz Library on the Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary
campus has served as a repository for the synodical archives for central
Pennsylvania, Delaware, most of Maryland, and the Metropolitan District of
Columbia area. That collection not only includes old parish registers from
defunct congregations, but those from active ones.
All original parish registers are unavailable to the general public.
For general public access (including genealogical researchers) to information
contained within parish registers, transcripts of many of them are available
for public inspection Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Saturdays 9 - 12 & 1 - 4
and Thursday evenings from 6-9 at the Adams County Historical Society located
on the Seminary campus (PO Box 4325, Gettysburg, PA 17325).
Information is also available on microfilm through the services of:
The Genealogical Department
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
50 East North Temple Street
Salt Lake City, Utah 84150; and
The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania
Hall of the Historical Society
1300 Locust Street
Philadelphia, PA 19107
Public Access to the parish register microfilms at the A. R. Wentz Library is
limited to written requests under specific conditions. Telephone requests
cannot be handled. The Synod Committee on Archives has authorized Mrs. Sara
Mummert, who is very familiar with the records, to respond to written
requests for service through only the microfilmed parish registers. Please
note that her search cannot be a complete genealogical exploration. Moreover,
there can be no guarantee that the information desired will be found.
Any party requesting an initial search of the microfilm, please send specific
questions and a check for $20 (for one hour research) payable to: Sara
Mummert, The Lutheran Theological Seminary, 61 Seminary Ridge, Gettysburg, PA
17325. Mrs. Mummert
will advise the client of the results of her research and will indicate if
additional time at $20 per hour will be required.
